TRACJUSA

TRACJUSA treats 100,000 metric tons of excess liquid porcine manure per year utilizing the VALPUREN ® process. This excess cannot be used in the agricultural area where it is generated. The process was co-developed by SENER and SGT.

This process is a model for good environmental practices since it recycles the liquid manure fertilizer, takes advantage of its energy content, and also recovers its water. The recycled fertilizer, more efficient than chemical fertilizer of equivalent composition, is transported to faraway agricultural areas. The liquid manure’s energy content, associated with biodegradable organic material, is recovered via a VALPUREN ® related biodigestion process. The process obtains biogas utilized as fuel when combined with natural gas in an annexed 16 MWe high efficiency cogeneration facility. Finally, the water – which makes up almost 95% of the excess liquid manure, is recovered in liquid form as a condensate used in cogeneration which significantly reduces the plant's water consumption.

TRACJUSA obtained a 14001:2004 UNE-EN-ISO compliance certificate which pertains to environmental management systems. Due to the success achieved from this plant's operations, SENER has been offered the distinction of carrying out R&D projects in collaboration with the University of Lerida as well as GIRO, a Catalonian regional government research center. The research projects focus on liquid manure co-digestion used to generate biogas and electrical energy, which will provide an important contribution to the management of climate change.
