Sener Power and Process

Since the company’s beginnings, SENER has been a pioneer in the renewable energies field. It has tackled wide ranging projects promoted by the Division of Energy and the Environment, developing new processing methods in the treatment of Urban Solid Waste (USW), liquid manure, and oils. This work has always been carried out with efficient use of energy in mind.

Amongst the group's latest initiatives is the task of creating two liquid manure plants. Their construction, in the Polan and Consuegra municipalities in the province of Toledo, has already begun. Each has the ability to treat 100,000 metric tons of liquid manure per year with a 16 MW annexed cogeneration unit. SENER's anaerobic biodigestion technology is used to treat liquid manure, utilizing the VALPUREN® process which is based on experience acquired from the TRACJUSA industrial facilities that SENER built and has operated in Juneda (City of Lerida) since the year 2000. SENER has developed other technologies along with the VALPUREN® process, such as the regeneration of used lubricant oil, which is utilized in the ECOLUBE plant in Fuenlabrada.

In USW energy exploitation, it is important to highlight the ZABALGARBI, S.A initiative. The plant is located in Bilbao and is a worldwide leader in USW processing and management. It utilizes a proprietary thermodynamic development cycle with a gas turbine, called SENER-2. This has been the core reference point for the development of another cycle with greater efficiency, and without a gas turbine: the SENER-4.

Similarly, in recent years, this division has focused its efforts on thermosolar energy which caused it to lead the creation of Torresol Energy. SENER has been an innovative technological pioneer in the renewable energies field and has now achieved a position of worldwide leadership in the sector.
